Background of the study
Yoruba folklore, with its rich oral traditions, serves as a repository of cultural values and historical experiences. Syntax, as the structural backbone of language, plays a crucial role in conveying these narratives with depth and nuance (Adebola, 2023). This study examines how syntactic choices in Yoruba folklore enhance the delivery of cultural narratives and reinforce communal identity. Through careful analysis of proverbs, stories, and chants, the research reveals that specific syntactic patterns not only organize linguistic information but also embed cultural symbolism and traditional wisdom. Recent linguistic research has highlighted that variations in sentence structure, word order, and clause embedding contribute to the emotive and mnemonic qualities of folklore (Falade, 2024). This investigation employs both qualitative discourse analysis and quantitative syntactic profiling to uncover the underlying principles that govern the construction of narrative syntax. By understanding these patterns, the study aims to bridge the gap between linguistic theory and cultural studies, offering insights into how language structures serve as vessels for cultural heritage. Such findings are particularly relevant in the context of globalization, where preserving indigenous narratives is paramount to maintaining cultural diversity (Ogunyemi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the cultural importance of Yoruba folklore, there is insufficient analysis of the syntactic mechanisms that underpin narrative construction. Traditional studies have often overlooked the role of syntax, focusing instead on content and semantics. This oversight creates a gap in understanding how language structure enhances the transmission of cultural narratives. Initial observations suggest that complex syntactic forms may obscure meaning for modern audiences while simultaneously enriching cultural expression. This study seeks to address these inconsistencies by systematically analyzing the syntax of Yoruba folklore. The problem is compounded by the scarcity of resources that integrate linguistic and cultural perspectives, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach to studying narrative syntax.
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This research underscores the integral role of syntax in preserving and conveying cultural narratives. Its findings will be instrumental for educators, folklorists, and linguists alike, aiding efforts to document and revitalize Yoruba oral traditions. The study’s interdisciplinary approach enriches both linguistic theory and cultural heritage preservation (Omolara, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the analysis of syntactic structures in Yoruba folklore narratives. It focuses solely on oral traditions and does not extend to modern literary texts or other genres.
